tary (Appointments) in this matter. It would be
necessary of course to choose someone who would
be persona grata in, say, Oxford or Cambridge and
whose knowledge and judgment could be thoroughly
relied on.

It would also be a help if you could provide
me with notes of an informal character with regard to
the life and work of an Educational Officer and the
opportunities for interesting work and study in con-
nection with Chinese civilisation and art, which such
an officer might expect to enjoy.
16. In this connection you may be interested to
hear that, with a view to overcoming the widespread
ignorance which similarly prevails in regard to Malaya,
the Straits Settlements and Federated Malay States
Governments have recently agreed, at my suggestion, to
the compilation of a short illustrated pamphlet descriptive
of the country and indicating the attractions of a career
in the Government services there. It is proposed to dis-
tribute this pamphlet widely to the principal Schools
and Universities, and it is hoped by this means to stimu-
late the interest of potential candidates of the right
stamp
